State of blogging

Nice for the end of the year: the state of blogging for 2009. On technorati.com I came accross this study about blogging and bloggers. This website for blogs did an extensive study about motivations, background and content of blogs that are registered with Technorati. It researched for example the relation between blogs for professional use or as a hobby and they found that 2/3 of people using Twitter have a blog. Continue Reading »

New HTML5: waiting for browsers

For a while now W3C, the World Wide Web consortium, is working on a new version of HTML. In the words of Philippe Le Hegaret (in an article for Web Monkey) the new version would be a “full-fledged computing platform awash with video, animation and real-time interactions, yet free of the hacks and plug-ins common today.” Continue Reading »

Firefox most used browser

To my surprise I noticed yesterday that Firefox has surpassed Internet Explorer as the most popular window to the world wide web. As of last month 47,5 % of Internet users work with this open source browser. Explorer holds about 37% divided over IE 6,7 and 8. Lately Firefox looses a bit of ground to Google Chrome and IE8, but it is clear: Firefox rules. Last July 47,9 % of internet users worked with Firefox and a year ago it was 44%. Safari and Opera also grow but just very slowly, only some decimal points over a year. This interesting information is published by w3schools.

Linux laptop for pupils in Uruguay

Last week i read on the BBC site about a project that provides a simple laptop for primary school children in Uruguay. This is not a new idea in itself but only now i noticed the fact that these machines run Linux. The plan was to make a laptop for only $100 but the machines that have been delivered cost $260 which includes maintenance, training and internet access. Continue Reading »

Build a network: LinkedIn

A couple of months ago I came accross LinkedIn and have discovered that this is a very helpful tool for social networking. It is different from sites like Facebook in it’s clear focus on professional use. Your profile is build around your work experience and the companies that you have worked for. There is room to give updates on your current work projects and to send messages to fellow site members. Continue Reading »

Check your Impact

Customers are often most interested in how their websites will do on Google and how many people are actually visiting their online pages. This makes perfect sense and probably should be the main reason of having a website, because a website without visitors will not be very effective. But just as often expectations of Google rankings are way beyond what this search engine can deliver. Google ranking and visitor number are not the only things that count. The only way to know how effective your website really is, is by getting besides the normal statistics also some more subjective impressions on the table. Luckily there are a number of other ways to measure how your website is doing and how it is perceived besides the regular webstatistics or Google Analytics. Continue Reading »

Back to Flat

Thomas Friedman | The World is Flat (2007)

The American journalist Thomas Friedman might be most well known for his book The World is Flat in which he describes how computers and new communication techniques like Internet and email have made the world ‘flat’ again. What he means is that with these developments people are closer to one another than before and the world on a more equal footing again. Not only distance and time have become less important, also differences in the distribution of wealth have been flattened.
